Petteri Waris (b. 1992 in Finland) studied classical accordion at the Sibelius-Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki with Matti Rantanen and at the Folkwang University of Arts in Essen, Germany. In addition he has participated in masterclasses of Geir Draugsvoll, Stefan Hussong, Claudio Jacomucci, Veli Kujala, Joseph Macerollo and Janne Rättyä.

 

In 2015 Petteri Waris won first prize in one of the most prestigious accordion competitions, the International Accordion Competition Klingenthal in Germany. The following year he was awarded with the renowned Folkwang Preis in Essen. Waris has performed at festivals such as ZeitGenuss Festival in Karlsruhe, Stelzenfestspiele bei Reuth, International Accordion Festival Kragujevac, Sata-Häme Soi Festival and Kokkola Winter Accordion in Finland. His performances have been broadcasted among others on Deutschlandfunk, WDR3 and Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE. As a soloist Waris has played with the Sibelius-Academy Sinfonietta, Kirkkonummi Chamber Orchestra, Vogtland Philharmonie, Neue Philharmonie Westfalen and Philharmonisches Orchester Hagen. In 2019 Petteri Waris played the world premiere of the accordion concerto "Shape-Shifter" by Veli Kujala with the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra conducted by Tomas Djupsjöbacka.

Petteri Waris is a member of the contemporary music ensemble E-MEX. Besides the contemporary accordion works and transcriptions for the accordion, his repertoire stretches to other music genres as well.
